At the most generic level, a consumer is someone who consumes a product or service while a customer is the one who buys or purchases a product or service. The two terms may seem similar, but they have different meanings from a marketing perspective. For instance, there are situations when the customer and consumer are the same person, as is the case when someone purchases a product/service for their own personal consumption. However, there are also situations in which the two entities are separate as in the case of trade customers (i.e., wholesalers and distributors) that purchases products and services and then resells them to other business or to the final consumer. So please take note and remember this distinction as you read through the various sections.
